Basic Human Needs or BHN is a project headed by Hearts to Nourish Hope in which members in the community can trade labor for basic human necessities like food, clothes, and shelter.  The project will come to life in a number of innovative ways.  It will:

 

  • Support the training of youth in the business of trade and bartering
  • Create a stronger local economy by producing more business options
  • Help meet the basic needs of community members

 

The project is still in its beginning stages, but once it gets going, we anticipate its being one of the most beneficial programs Hearts to Nourish Hope has to offer.

The mission of the program is to provide Georgia youth, ages 16 to 17, valuable work experiences. The program places youth at various work sites that include local businesses, non-profit organizations and government agencies.
The program is administered through the Georgia Department of Human Services, Division of Family and Children Services and was originally designed to ensure that Georgia’s children are equipped with the tools and opportunities necessary to enable them to mature into well-balanced, healthy, and productive members of society.
Application Information for Youth
The application can be found on the DHS webpage.  Below are the application link instructions:
2. Click on  the “Family & Children Services, Division of” link located in the center of the webpage.
3. In the top left corner of the page, click on ”Services“.
4. On the “Services” drop down menu click on ”TeenWork“.
5. Once on the Georgia TeenWork webpage, scroll to the bottom of the page for the link to the 2012 Georgia TeenWork Youth Application.
Program Highlights
  • The program will begin June 1st and will end July 31st. Only youth who are in foster care can apply for this opportunity.
  • All youth who apply may not be selected.
  • Selected youth cannot exceed 25 hours per work week and will be paid $7.25 an hour.
  • All participating youth will be paid on a Georgia Department of Human Services debit card or their wages will deposited in the youth’s personal banking account.
  • Job skills and work ethics training will be provided to selected youth.
  • Each youth, by DHS Region will be assigned to a Youth Career Coach.
  • Employers will be recruited (through a separate process) in the youth’s residential area.
