Mission

Hearts' student internHearts to Nourish Hope's mission is to create a place where youth and youg adults can further their education and develop life and career skills, through innovative programming and service to the community by providing the tools and support needed to become successful, felf-sufficient, cobntributing members of society.

Our goals for our students are for them to earn their high school diploma or GED and then to go on to college or technical school and/or gain employment, with the ability and support needed to advance along a career ladder.

The working philosophy of Hearts to Nourish Hope is to hold youth accountable for their behavior, toStaff listening to student explain food pantry guidelines. make clear through general program guidelines and in  one-on-one counseling sessions the self-destructive consequences of careless or selfish actions. In addition, Hearts' programs teach community service and demonstrate to each young person in concrete ways his/her potential for doing good. We believe that long-term change always requires deliberately replacing bad actions with good actions.

 History

Hearts to Nourish Hope began in 1995 with a collaboration between United Way, Judge Glaze of the Clayton County Juvenile Court, and the American Tan Sao Do Karate Studio.

Staff

Currently, eight full-time staff plus 7-8 adults who work part-time make up the organization's staff. In addition, volunteers help in the classrooms, office, and food pantry. Volunteers also provide training and mentoring support for individual youth.

Staff turnover is very low. All staff have at least a bachelor's degree and experience working with low-income youth. They are organized and flexible multi-taskers, comfortable dealing with behavioral and emotional issues. Because they serve as role models for the youth, our staff must consistently demonstrate a strong work ethic. They offer youth from often chaotic backgrounds a sense of safety, and students want to "hang out".

All staff and volunteers go through background checks by the Clayton County Police Department. Both staff and volunteers receive initial and ongoing training, by Hearts staff and through outside resources. All staff are encouraged to increase their training whenever possible.

The staff of Hearts to Nourish Hope is diverse. We provide opportunities for staff, youth, and community members to share their differences, and we offer diversity training to both staff and students.
